The Center for Defense Studies is an initiative of the American Enterprise Institute to promote and shape debate about the ends, ways, and means of American military power: its strategic purposes, the requirements for force posture and structure, and the resulting programmatic and budgetary demands.  In a time of increasing international uncertainty, friend and foe alike calibrate their actions according to their understanding of current and future American power, along with our ability to honor our commitments, preserve our interests, and promote our principles around the world. The establishment of the Center of Defense Studies marks a new venture for AEI, while at the same time reaffirming one of our core propositions: that American military strength is a necessary condition for the continued growth of human liberty and prosperity.
