The Other Nuclear Threat: Avoiding War in South Asia
On Monday, the Center for Defense Studies and the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center will host an event on the precarious nuclear balance in South Asia. With much attention focused recently on the threat of nuclear terrorism (case of point: the administration’s Nuclear Security Summit), it can be easy to forget that the potential for a nuclear confrontation between India and Pakistan remains very real. Moday’s conference, which will feature presentations from Feroz Hassan Khan of the Naval Postgraduate School and Col. (Ret.) John H. Gill of NDU, will provide an opportunity to examine Pakistan and India’s respective nuclear doctrines and strategies and discuss how the threat of conflict can be mitigated — topics addressed in NPEC’s recent volume on Pakistan’s nuclear future.
